Hi! I am Sumaiya Malik. This blog has some articles & paintings that are a snapshot of what I do in Austin, TX. Most of the articles on my site have been published in a major publication such as Austin American Statesman, Austin Chronicle, Tribeza & Austin South Asian.
Austin's weather is great for growing persimmons. Find a happy spot in full sun. The tree will thrive on its own. The fruit will spread happiness and bring people together.
Inspired by Van Gogh
I painted Bedroom in Arles, by Van Gogh, for my daughter. Every painting of mine has been a journey. Not only did I learn about the technique of Van Gogh in detail, I also learnt that Van Gogh's bedroom was his happiest place. For me the space extends beyond the room to my home in Austin.
Inspired by Paul Cezaane
I painted The Black Clock by Cezaane early in my oil painting exploration. It's funny, but Cezaane too was pretty young when he rendered the black clock without arms. It made me reflect about how time may pass, but good memories stay with us in every time.
Austin City Limits
An annual music festival, ACL becomes the heart of the city once a year. We enjoy ACL and the music scene of the city as a family. We experience new bands and artistic collaborations. The festival adds to our experience of enjoying the city to its fullest.
Family trip - girl crossing lake
Sky and water have always drawn me in. I thought I could never paint them. I took on the challenge and was surprised with the results. It taught me a life lesson to push my boundary. The experience is worth it.
Inspired by Picasso's Three Musicians
I made this painting for a dear friend's new home. When I started, I did not realize that there was a dog sitting behind the three musicians. That was a surprise! By then the painting was more than half complete. I went on to complete the work.
In the process, I learned about Picasso. His work taught me to widen my horizon and look deeper into things.
Barbecue in the Driveway
Just finished my first portrait! This is a happy slice of my parents life. I took this picture when they were barbecuing Chicken Tikka for dinner and I was pulling into the driveway. Portraits usually become larger than life, but I like the ones that show what we do.
Girl crossing lake - zoomed in
This painting is tied to the the family crossing lake painting. I wanted to explore zooming in an image, but with paints. This became my first series.
River Place Nature Trail
My first acrylic painting comes from an iPhone picture a friend took while hiking on the River Place Nature Trail in Austin.
Austin is known for it's nature trails that range from flat to up and down. This trail is one of the hardest to do. Hikers are so passionate about it that when the trail was threatened to close, they worked hard with the city to keep it open. Fortunately, it all worked out. The trail is open and people come from far and wide to build their stamina.
